On the relative importance of the number of followers on Twitter…

Marion had exactly the same experience as I did... |
She saw the number of her followers explode overnight when Twitter was built on the user list suggested for the French audience (you can click on her account, after this article). She has nearly 30,000 "subscribers," while I'm nearly 25,000. I totally agree with her observation:
“So why, despite an impressive number of people who follow me, is it all so absolutely meaningless? Simply because we have no way of knowing whether these users are really active, if they continue to tweeter and if they pay any attention to what I say. Also because a vast majority of replies I get from these new users - they are easy to spot - are old attempts to dredge ("hi U!... "), completely blank replies, totally irrelevant, or predated such as a response one month after a tweet.”
Well, I must admit, I do receive slightly fewer "invitations" of the caramail type - we do what we can with what we have. And since the list of suggested users is no longer automatically added with each new user, I went from over 500 new followers a day to a few hundred maximum, sometimes even less. But actually, between 1,000 to 25,000 followers didn’t changed anything in the way I used Twitter, and I think that people who find my account are more intrigued than really "impressed" by the figure. Finally, I hope so for them... |
